S3 Vectors — AWS's purpose-built vector storage for RAG and semantic search — now supports metadata pre-filtering: constraining the search space by metadata predicates before the vector similarity search runs. For workloads where results have to be both relevant and correctly scoped, pre-filtering improves recall most when the filter is narrow.
Vector search over an entire archive while applying filters as a post-pass can miss relevant results — the top-k by similarity may be dominated by rows that fail the filter, pushing in-scope matches out of the result window. Pre-filtering applies the metadata constraint first, so the similarity search only ever sees relevant rows. That directly raises recall on filtered queries.
If your vector search operates on a big archive but every query is scoped by ownership, compliance, or licensing metadata, metadata pre-filtering is the mechanism that turns "similar across everything" into "similar within the thing you're allowed to see." S3 Vectors applies it natively — worth standardizing on if you're building scoped RAG or retrieval with S3 Vectors.
