Machiavelli's Neighbours: The Realism Node and Its Edges

Part of the Philosophy section — a companion to Machiavelli's Notes, Leadership Philosophy, Minimal Stoic Unix and Bushidō: The Discipline Credo.
Framing: A Short History of Philosophy

Machiavelli is the pivot of this whole history — the thinker after whom philosophy could no longer pretend the ideal was the same as the real. And yet, for a long time, the influence graph on the Philosophy page drew him as an island: Aquinas reached him, the Skeptics whispered to his credo, and the line stopped there. That understates him badly. This piece draws the missing edges and names the intermediate thinkers — Cicero, Livy, Polybius upstream; Hobbes, Bodin, Spinoza, Nietzsche, Clausewitz downstream — who connect the realism credo to every other node in the section.

The upstream: who made Machiavelli

Machiavelli did not invent realism from nothing. He answered something. The moral-ideal tradition he pushed against runs from Aristotle through Cicero — whose De Officiis was the standard mirror-for-princes of the Renaissance, the book that told rulers how they ought to behave. Machiavelli's whole project is a reply to that Ciceronian frame: stop describing the ideal ruler and start describing the actual one.

Two older historians gave him the material. Livy's Ab Urbe Condita — the rise and crisis of the Roman republic — is the source of the Discourses on Livy, the republican half of Machiavelli's thought, where he reads Roman history as a laboratory of what holds a free state together and what rots it. Polybius, the Greek hostage in Rome, supplied the theory of anacyclosis — the cycle of good and corrupt constitutions — and the argument that a mixed constitution resists the cycle longest. That is the lineage of the realism credo's core habit: watch how things actually cycle, not how they should hold still.

So the upstream edges are: Aristotle → Cicero → Machiavelli, with Livy and Polybius feeding in from the side. Aquinas was already in the graph — the scholastic frame Machiavelli shatters.

The downstream: who Machiavelli made

After Machiavelli, realism became a river with many mouths.

• Hobbes takes the observation that the world runs on fear and self-interest and radicalises it into a theory of the sovereign state: the only thing standing between us and the war of all against all is a power strong enough to hold the ring. The line from The Prince to Leviathan is the cleanest edge in modern political thought.
• Bodin does the same work a generation earlier and in the other direction: his Six Books of the Commonwealth (1576) turns the prince's need for his own armed force into the legal concept of sovereignty — the power that commands its own means and recognises no superior. What Machiavelli assumed, Bodin defines.
• Spinoza, in the Tractatus Politicus, takes Machiavelli seriously enough to defend him from calumny and to build his own account of how power is actually held on top of that reading — separating what men imagine states are for from what keeps them in being.
• Nietzsche prized Machiavelli's virtù — the decisive, world-shaping energy — as a cousin of his own will to power, and counted him among the thinkers who reason in the grand style. This is the edge that runs realism into existential honesty.
• Clausewitz carries political realism into war: friction, the fog, the gap between the plan and the contact — all of it Machiavelli's fortuna applied to the battlefield.

The four edges to the credos

With those intermediates in place, Machiavelli stops being a leaf and becomes a hub — and each edge lands on one of the four credos of this section.

To Leadership Philosophy — via Nietzsche and existentialism

The empathy-and-change credo sounds soft, but its "existential honesty" root runs straight through Nietzsche back to Machiavelli: you cannot lead change if you will not first see the room as it is. The change-leadership curve — shock, rejection, exploration, commitment — is a description of incentives, and Machiavelli supplies the cold half the empathetic leader needs in order not to be replaced mid-change. Empathy without realism gets voted out; realism without empathy gets mutinied. The leadership credo needs both halves, and this edge is where they meet.

To Minimal Stoic Unix — via Bodin and Hobbes: own your arms, own your stack

The most practical edge. The Prince, chapters XII–XIII, is the original "own your arms" argument: mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous, because a prince who is not armed with his own force has already lost it — whatever the treaties say. Bodin and Hobbes formalise that instinct into sovereignty; the Minimal Stoic Unix inherits it for builders:

If you depend on rented infrastructure for the thing that is your mission, you are the prince with auxiliaries. If you cannot export it, you do not own it. If you cannot restore it, you never backed it up.

Self-hosting, plain-text config, a server you can ssh into and understand — that is not nostalgia. It is the builder's version of being armed with one's own force: the sovereignty to act is what makes the calm yours and not borrowed.

To Bushidō — via Clausewitz and Musashi

Machiavelli wrote his own Art of War (Dell'arte della guerra, 1521) — he is not only the prince's adviser but the captain's. The edge runs forward through Clausewitz — the decisive blow, friction, the fog — into Musashi's Fire scroll: sen, seizing the initiative, striking the vital point once, with everything. Political realism and warrior discipline are the same instinct at two scales: see the room clearly, then act without hesitation. The Bushidō credo supplies the training that makes virtù possible on schedule; Machiavelli supplies the sight that tells the sword where to land.

To the History itself — the hinge

Machiavelli is the node the whole timeline turns on. Before him, the tradition asks how should we live?; after him, it can no longer avoid how do we in fact live? Every modern node in the graph — Hobbes, Spinoza, Nietzsche, existentialism — is downstream of that single turn. Remove him and the graph falls into two halves that no longer speak: the ancients who described the ideal, and the moderns who describe the actual.

The graph, redrawn

Count the edges now. Three classical feeders (Cicero, Livy, Polybius) and Aquinas flow in; five modern heirs (Bodin, Hobbes, Spinoza, Nietzsche, Clausewitz) flow out; and direct lines run from the node to three of the four credos (stoic-unix via sovereignty, leadership via existential honesty, Bushidō via Clausewitz) — plus the realism credo itself. The realism credo was never the odd one out. It is the connective tissue.

A reading order along the edges

1. Cicero, De Officiis — the moral ideal Machiavelli answers.
2. Livy, Ab Urbe Condita (books I–V) — the republic Machiavelli reads.
3. Polybius, The Histories, book VI — anacyclosis and the mixed constitution.
4. Machiavelli, The Prince + Discourses on Livy — read as a pair: the crisis half and the republican half.
5. Bodin, Six Books of the Commonwealth — sovereignty defined.
6. Hobbes, Leviathan — realism radicalised.
7. Spinoza, Tractatus Politicus — power examined without moralising.
8. Clausewitz, On War — the same realism on the battlefield.
9. Musashi, The Book of Five Rings — the discipline half of the same instinct.

Machiavelli was never an island. He is the hinge between the classical ideal and the modern real — and now the graph shows the roads that actually run through him.
