Machiavelli's Notes: The Realism Credo for Builders

A short philosophy of symmetry as invariance under transformation, and why machines finally made the a priori empirical.

Framing: A Short History of Philosophy
Machiavelli is the uncomfortable third pillar. The Stoic teaches you how to endure. Unix teaches you how to build small. Machiavelli teaches you how to survive — not in the palace of a prince, but in any arena where your work depends on the decisions of people who do not share your incentives. It is a realism credo, and it pairs surprisingly well with the other two.
Take things as they are, not as they ought to be. He who builds on the world as it should be builds on sand.
The core of Machiavelli's work — from Il Principe to the Discorsi — is a refusal of moral daydreaming. Before him, political advice was mostly exhortation: be just, be merciful, be trustworthy. His insight was not to deny those virtues but to observe that in practice, the ruler who is unfailingly candid, gentle, and predictable is precisely the one who gets replaced by someone who is not.
None of this is an endorsement of cruelty. It is an observation: incentives and fear and self-interest move the world more reliably than good intentions. A builder ignores that at their own cost.
A man cannot always be good, nor should he be, when the situation demands otherwise.
His most misunderstood lesson is the fox and the lion: strength alone is not enough, cleverness alone is not enough — you need both. The lion scares the wolves, the fox recognizes the traps. And: it suffices to appear merciful, faithful, and honest while being ready to act otherwise when necessary.
The uncomfortable modern reading: perception governs outcomes. A capable product nobody believes in fails; a mediocre one with credible positioning wins. The stoic-unix instinct says do the work, be honest, stay small. Machiavelli adds: yes — and also take responsibility for how the work appears, because that too is part of doing it well. Visibility is not vanity; it is maintenance of the conditions under which you may keep building.
He never wrote the sentence exactly, but the idea runs through everything: the preservation of the thing you are responsible for can justify choices you would never make for yourself. For a prince, that thing is the state. For a builder, it is the project, the team, the users, the mission.
The practical version is narrower than the slogan: not "anything goes," but "choose means proportional to what is being protected." Small, honest tools and calm working methods are the means compatible with a project you intend to keep for ten years. Machiavelli gives you permission to be hard about the few non-negotiable things — deadlines, commitments, the integrity of the mission — and to be patient, even gentle, about everything else. He is not a license for spectacle; he is a corrective against naive optimism.
Machiavelli is the rare thinker who took chance seriously without surrendering to it. Fortune governs roughly half of human affairs, he wrote — the rest is skill, preparation, and decisiveness (virtù). His image of Fortune as a torrent that can be channeled by well-built dikes is, in modern terms, a theory of preparedness as the only control you have over the uncontrollable.
This lands very close to the stoic-unix serenity line: accept the upstream you cannot change, change the config you can, and know that one of these is always easier than it looks. Machiavelli just raises the stakes: the dikes must be built before the flood, or they are decoration.
Fortune is the arbiter of half our actions, but she allows us to control the other half.
The three credos form one coherent stance:
A quiet life is a luxury that must be defended against both attackers and optimists. Machiavelli is the sentry who stays awake so the Stoic can sleep.
Machiavelli was not a villain. He was a former civil servant who watched his republic fall and wrote down honestly how power actually works, so that decent people would not keep losing to indecent ones. Kept alongside the Stoics and the small tools, his realism credo is not cynicism — it is the sentry at the gate of a calm life.
